LG’s LE5500 is the latest LED TV to hit the market, offering an impressive range of features including full 1080p high definition viewing and a 5,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio – but how does it fare against the competition?

As with any tv led lcd panel, it’s important to remember that the only difference is the way that the screen is lit, using light emitting diodes instead of fluorescent tubes. The display itself still uses the twisting of crystals to control the amount of light shining through it.

The LE5500 tv led is rose wood in colour, which tends to work well in more traditional homes but may not be the true cutting edge chrome and black style that suits very modern living rooms. The television is a shallow 1.2 inches in depth and weighs about 65 pounds (around 30 kilogram’s) without its stand. With the stand the screen can rotate through 40 degrees, 20 degrees either side of the centre. It also comes fitted with VESA screw fittings for tv wall mounts.

The lcd tv panel features a local dimming option, where bulbs can be dimmed or brightened in different areas independently to improve on black levels. Unsurprisingly then, the black levels were very good and potentially better than some plasmas on the market right now.

The bulbs also use less power than fluorescent tubes which will be well received for the green consumer and great news for their wallets. The model also features some additional power saving options which include the ability to turn off the screen when listening to music and an intelligent sensor that adjusts the screens brightness and colour according to ambient light levels.

When it comes to connectivity, the tv lcd has a moderate range of inputs, with four HDMI ports, two component ports, USB 2.0 access and a 15-pin computer input. For sound, the unit comes with two 15 watt speakers which do sound a little tinny, but no more than those provided on its competitors.

The panel features TruMotion 240Hz – a super fast refresh rate that works great for sports viewing. However, this will did require some judder reduction and motion blur adjustment to work well. While this isn’t too hard a task, this could be a major drawback for the less A/V literature consumer.

Also there’s no direct control button on the remote control for the TruMotion setting, which can mean going through a long set of menus each time you switch between normal and sports viewing.

Colour rendition on the tv was impressive with deep colours from a wide colour gamut. The viewing angle was also good, with no contrast degradation up to 45 degrees either side of centre.

The tv also features wireless connectivity with a range of video sites, including Netflix, and Youtube, and is Skype integrated, allowing you to make free internet calls without the use of a PC.

Priced at around $1500, the LE5500 LED TV comes in at the mid-range and fairly so. The tv is an attractive product with great black levels and internet connectivity that most consumers will really enjoy. While it’s not cutting edge, it’s certainly suitable for the average consumer and stacks up well against its closest competitors, the Samsung UN55C6500 LED TV or the Sharp LC-52LE820U.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

There’s plenty of LED TV’s out there and I was fortunate enough to review the new Samsung 8000 55 inch 3D LED TV.

The first thing that you’ll notice about this TV LED is the sheer size. At 55 inches, it’s huge and definitely only suitable for a very large living room or office. That said, if you can fit a 55 inch tvs in your room and find tv wall mounts big enough to hold them, it will certainly make a huge impact!

The tv itself is supported on an attractive four-legged chrome stand and stands at 83cm high. The front colour is brushed titanium with a finish that will really bring a modern edge to your living room.

In terms of connectivity, the 3D LED TV features one component in, one a/v in, an optical audio out, a DVI audio in, four HDMI ports, two USB ports and two SCART ports. It also features Dolby Digital Plus sound and SRS TheaterSound for that true home cinema experience.

The next thing that hits you is the 3D. The Samsung offers an immersive viewing experience by moving away from the old two dimensional tv into the realms of 3D, providing fantastic picture quality via the 3D HyperReal engine at the full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080.

As far as performance goes, the Samsung was certainly one of the most convincing 3D tv’s I’ve seen so far, rivaling the Sony Bravia KDL-52HX903 or LG 55LX9900. While I did notice an occasional ghostly outline between the two layers of the 3D image, this was rare and overall the 3D looked great.

The tv also has a built in 3D converter, allowing you to convert your 2D movies into 3D. By in large it didn’t really affect most of the movies I tried on it, but it was much more noticeable when playing racing games on my Xbox 360.

The tv had to perform with 2D viewing too and it did a great job, with a fantastic image quality, rich colors, sharp details and deep black levels. I did find people to be a little off colour however, but this was quickly fixed with a colour correction through the on-screen menu.

The Samsung also comes packed with features including the Internet@TV platform, providing you with music, video and social networking including access to LoveFilm, iPlayer, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and other simple wireless content right through your tv. While I would have preferred to have a keyboard, it was great to be able to access all those sites from the comfort of my sofa with no need to boot up a pc.

Another feature is the built in freeview HD tuner, allowing you to enjoy hours of free HD tv. You can even plug your own USB or hard disk into it and use it as a personal video recorder, which was a feature I know I would get a lot of use out of.

The tv comes in just under £2700 or $3150 – a hefty price but for the size and feature set, its extremely competitive in today’s market. So get out there and give it a try.

—————————————————————————————————————————–

Although TV wall mounts are fantastic ways to mount your big screen TV, some consumers may not be comfortable with drilling into walls, paying for workmen to install a wall mount or having their TV’s movement restricted to one pivot point.

Historically this would mean a piece of potentially unattractive furniture to sit the TV on, but with the rise in built in TV brackets, TV stands are becoming increasingly stylish and versatile ways to mount your TV.

TV stands

As TV’s become bigger and flatter, TV stands have seen a move in how they present and support displays. TV’s don’t just sit on top of stands – many stands now support full ‘H’ or ‘T’ shaped flat screen tv wall mounts allowing the TV to be raised, lowered, swivelled and tilted to the same extent as a wall mounted bracket.

Most stands offer a range of additional functionality over flat panel tv wall mounts, including shelving, drawers and even built in speakers and amplifiers. Most stands will feature backboards too, hiding wiring or allowing cables to be run through the pillars holding the TV bracket.

TV stands can be built from a range of materials, from relatively inexpensive plastic to wood, oak, chrome and even reinforced glass. They’re generally more expensive than their lcd TV wall mounts counterparts due to the additional materials used and unsurprisingly, spending more will generally get you a better build quality.

They are often very stylish, providing fantastic clean lines and attractive designs. They also provide a mounting solution that allows repositioning around the room should the need require.

Prices

It’s difficult to put a price on TV stands as the price will be dependant on a range of options including the quality, style and size of stand required.

Simple glass stands can be relatively inexpensive, with costs starting around $75. Of course, the larger and heavier your TV is, the larger and more capable a stand it will require. Clear glass stands for TV’s up to 50″ may cost double that or more.

Stands with pillars and mounting brackets may cost considerably more, from $250 upwards. Stands allowing the brackets to be raised, lowered, swivelled and tilted will cost even more, ranging from $350 and up.

There’s really no limit to how much you can spend on a TV stand and of course, more functionality will cost you even more. If you’re looking for a stand that includes 5-way built in speakers and an amplifier you may be working from a minimum $500 budget all the way up to $3000.

The verdict

The ‘right’ stand for you will probably be limited by your budget. You may have spent a lot on your TV already, so budget may be an issue. If that’s the case, or if you have limited room available, you may want to consider lcd or plasma TV wall mounts. They are generally less expensive and will become completely invisible behind your TV.

On the other hand, if you have a little more to spend, more space available, a need for shelves and drawers, or need to move your TV around the room regularly, you may find a TV stand works for you. As stands will be prominently displayed in your room, consider the best style for your room. If you live in a rustic cottage, consider a wooden stand. If you live in an ultra modern flat, why not go all out with a sleek black glass stand and really make a statement.

The final decision is up to you, but one thing can be assured; your new TV will look better with a professional stand or mount and prices will vary, so shop around first!

Ceiling mounts are an increasing popular choice for businesses, allowing TV’s to be hung from ceilings to maximise space and cater for a wide range of applications.

From sports bars to catalogue stores to airport terminals, a ceiling mount can provide a dynamic channel for displaying important information for customers and keeping that information out of arms reach, including appointment information in waiting lounges, queue updates in busy retail stores and train times at railway stations.

Introducing the ceiling mount

As the name suggests, ceiling mounts are hung from the ceiling, so need to be very tough and malleable to support their own and the tv’s weight. They tend to be made from aluminium metal, a more expensive metal than that used for standard tv wall mounts but known for its strength and rigidity.

Being hung from the ceiling, their range of movement is much more flexible than flat screen tv wall mounts, allowing raising and lowering from the ceiling, tilting and full 360 degree rotation. This allows a much wider range of viewing angles and room layout options – so if you’re the type of person who likes to move their furniture around a lot, a ceiling mount could be thing for you.

Types of ceiling mount

The bracket used on a ceiling mount tends to follow those used for flat planel tv wall mounts – rectangular for widescreens tv’s and square for square tv’s.

While most ceiling mounts are made for single displays, some can hold two or more tv’s at once and even provide an additional fixing for a projector ceiling mount, allowing a whole array of displays to be hung from a single point on the ceiling. Of course, the more tv’s you have, the more they will weigh and the more demand they will put on your ceiling, so as with any plasma or lcd tv wall mounts, you should always consider the size and weight of your displays and the strength of the surface you will be attaching them to before choosing your mounting solution.

Mounting a ceiling bracket

Most ceiling mounts will come with a kit to help you install the ceiling mount safely to your ceiling. Once installed, the ceiling mount will need locking in place to prevent it from spinning on its own. These locks will need to be undone to adjust the position of the tv, but some ceiling mounts are equipped with accessories to allow for minor adjustments without the need to unlock them entirely.

Price

Unsurprisingly, all this added capability comes at a cost. Ceiling mounts are generally more expensive than their tv wall mounts counterparts, but if you can afford them, it’s worth it.
